The regeneration of Zlín, Ostrava and Glasgow

After lunch, Jiří Novosák from Tomáš Baťa University, Zlín, introduced the study of the Zlín Regional Cultural and Education Centre, which should become a symbolic gateway to the city, a symbol of regeneration and a place for leisure-time activities and education that is attractive to tourists. It is a long-term integrated city development project and right in the heart of the city. Three cultural institutions should concentrate in this place in the future.

Intellectual property will be crucial for the future!

The second part of the conference was devoted to the Green Book of the European Commission dealing with Unlocking the Potential of the Cultural and Creative Sectors.  Sylva Kováčiková, the Mayor of Bílovec, who represents the Czech delegation in the EU Committee of the Regions, introduced it as a discussion paper to awaken the creative potential in towns, cities, regions in the area of the cultural industry. After that, Marta Smolíková, Director, ProCulture/Open Society, p.b.c., had the floor and presented the highlights of the Green Book to the audience.

City marketing and its application in practice

Welcome to Day 2 of our Conference, from which we are again ready to feed fresh news. Today, the participants were welcomed by the head of the City and Regional Management Centre at the University of Ostrava, Petr Rumpel, who introduced his colleague from the West Bohemian University, Mr. Jiří Ježek.

Culture and creativity in regional development

As Petr Rumpel mentioned in his introduction, the conference is composed of two basic thematic lines. While in the morning participants were demonstrated examples of ongoing programmes in the European Capitals of Culture, the afternoon lectures focused on possible use of culture and creativity when regenerating urban zones and whole regions. Papers were delivered by both foreign and Czech experts - Ralf Ebert from Dortmund, Germany, Peter Trowles from Glasgow (European Capital of Culture 1990) and Petr Rumpel representing the Ostrava University. The experience of former and future European Capitals of Culture

This morning was entirely dedicated to the presentations and experiences of representatives of European Capitals of Culture that find themselves at various stages of their projects. Whereas Brigitte Zierhut-Bösch offered a retrospective look at the Linz 2009 project that climaxed last year, Zora Jaurová described the period of intensive preparations in which Košice, awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2013, currently finds itself. Susanne Skipiol of the Essen 2010 project offered a view of the Ruhr area, in which Essen is the current European Capital of Culture, while Blanka Marková and Markéta Volná shared current impressions of the culminating candidature of Ostrava. Conference opening

Just after nine o'clock at the Old Arena - club for culture and information 2015 - the Soft Factors in Regional Development of Regions with an Emphasis on Culture, Creativity and Innovation conference was officially opened. Blanka Marková, representing Ostrava 2015 - a candidate for the title of European Capital of Culture 2015, Radana Zapletalová, the chair of the cultural committee for the City of Ostrava, and Petr Rumpel, head of the Centre for Urban and Regional Management at Ostrava University, which is co-organizing the conference with the Ostrava 2015 team, introduced the conference. Soft Factors in Regional Development

On 24–25 June 2010, an international conference takes place at the Old Arena – a club for culture and information 2015 with the title “Soft Factors in the Regional Development of Regions With an Emphasis on Culture, Creativity and Innovation”. The conference is organized by the Centre of City and Regional Management associated with the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development at the Faculty of Scienc at Ostrava University in cooperation with the Ostrava 2015 team.
